African Americans on Postage Stamps

Honoring our Heritage

After a half-century of life and collecting stamps I did a quick search and found that no one was talking about our legacy in "small" pictures.  Stamps tell stories about all facets of life.  Before the art of letter writing goes the way of the dodo bird,
I thought I might share my passion about our heritage through stamps and perhaps we can learn something in the process.

A Bit About Me

My Story

I am an African American male living in the City of Brotherly Love.  Although lately it doesn't seem like that with the great loss of life we've had through violence in our city as of late, but that's a discussion to be had at another place and time.  I have traveled a lot, lived several places here and abroad, and returned home to live now, for the past two decades, where I was born and raised.

I have been collecting stamps since I was 9 years old.  At first, I was fascinated by all the different items you could see on stamps.  I loved having pen pals and collecting postage stamps and postmarks from all over the world.  Then as I grew older, I bought a used set of Scott stamp catalogs to see what was out there.  Eventually I settled on one or two companies to purchase stamps, as well as purchasing stamps at the post office.  Yes, they do still exist. However, the most fun in collecting is looking through post cards at flea markets and garage sales.  I turn the box backwards to look at the stamps.  I have been pleasantly surprised many times.

Even though I work with computers I have never started or written a blog.  Thus, this is my first adventure into it and it will be regarding two of my passions - stamps and my heritage.  I hope it is an enjoyable adventure for us all.
